August 14, 2013There's a lot of great prep football played in South Carolina, but some of the best is played in Spartanburg County. In fact, the county's nine schools have won more state championships since 1950 than any other county in the Palmetto State.
Former Herald-Journal preps reporter Jason Gilmer has written a book called "Where Champions Play - Spartanburg County Prep Football," which will be released Thursday by Hub City Press.
Gilmer's 180-page book is filled with more than 100 photos and the journalist interviewed former players, coaches and administrators to write the book. While it is a history book, the story focuses on the players and coaches who made the programs such a success.
From Willie Varner's success at Woodruff to Doc Davis' run of titles to Byrnes' current domination, the book looks at each school to see how and why they've become winners.
"Doing this book gave me a chance to catch up with a lot of the players and coaches I covered as the prep sports writer but also talk with some guys I only knew by reputation," Gilmer said.
"Spartanburg has always been good in prep football and I remember watching some of the greats as I grew up. I wanted to share stories about those players and coaches, and especially the ones I covered during the early part of this century, with those who shared the stadiums with me every Friday night."
