150 All Time Greatest SC High School Football Players

First, a note about this project. I started working on this as part of my passion for South Carolina High School football. What began as a thought for a good story for the website and the paper quickly turned into a full blown project with the goal of publishing in a book format. With a published novel to my credit, I reached out to some friends in the publishing industry and now have a book on the way: Legends of the Fall - South Carolina's Greatest Football Players.

I researched by talking to active coaches, retired coaches, referees, retired referees, and guys who played the game through the years - decades! I quickly found as I began to compile the list that it was going to be a daunting task and nearly impossible to do withoug leaving off some very good football players. I have working list of more than 300 players and in it's complete form, the book will have 500 players listed.

This list of 150 players was released early as a "sneak peak" at what it to come. I realize there is much debate as to who's missing from the list but can tell you there should be no debate about the worthiness of those on the list at this time.

Picking the greatest high school football players of all time in South Carolina history is an extremely difficult task. One has to consider changes in football strategy and the evolution of the game, physical training of the athletes and integration of that training in high schools and, of course, transcending decades of football. One thing that you must understand about this list is that when selecting these players ONLY their high school careers were considered. There was no consideration of post-high school accolades or accomplishments considered. So, this is a list of the best "high school players" not the best players who have played high school ball in South Carolina. This is a work in progress and these are the Top 150 at this time, though my list currently goes to more than 300 players.

If you want to chat about it or give some input, feel free to follow me on twitter @scvarsity and lets talk there!

1

Summers, Demetrius

RB

Lexington

This selection will cause the most debate but the bottom line is, Summers was a lethal offensive weapon, set national records and is still ranked among the best nationally, and had a four year varsity career. 9,076 yards rushing and 120 touchdowns and rarely played a complete game for the Wildcats. Those two stats still have him ranked 13 nationally all-time.

2

Solomon, Freddie

WR

Sumter

Solomon played quarterback on the 1970 Sumter High team. He rushed for 1,969 yards and scored 28 touchdowns on 208 carries, averaging 9.5 yards a carry. He passed for 10 touchdowns and scored 182 points in helping lead the Gamecocks to a 10-2 record. Was a dynamic player for one year in the integrated high school league. Prior to his senior year at Sumter, he played end and guard for Lincoln High School.

      3

Clowney, Jadavion

DE

South Pointe

A nightmare defensive end for opposing ball carriers, Clowney finished his three-year varsity career at South Pointe High School with an amazing 69.5 sacks and was the 2010 Mr. Football.

4

Cuda, Perry

QB

Summerville

Cuda was a Parade All-American who led the Greenwave to a 52-3 record in four seasons, passing for 5,600 yards and 60 touchdowns, and two state championships.

5

Green, AJ

WR

Summerville

Another four-year starter for the Greenwave, Green's 5,373 career receiving yards and 279 career receptions ranked second and fourth respectively on the National Federation of High Schools' football all-time career receiving records.

6

Worley, Justin

QB

Northwestern

Voted National Gatorade Player of the Year, Worley finished his career at Northwestern High School with 13,320 yards passing and 156 passing touchdowns in just three years as a starter. He led the Trojans to three consecutive 4A title appearances, winning the 2010 state title.

7

Davis, Steven

RB

Spartanburg

Rushed for 3,984 yards and 56 touchdowns in 1990 and 91 seasons for the Vikings, leading them to the State 4A DI title in 1991.

8

Engram, Bobby

WR

Camden

Thought of by many to be one of the most prolific receivers in state history, his legend still lives large in Camden, where he was a three-time all-state football player for the Bulldogs.

9

Manning, Stan

RB

Dillon

One of the state's top running backs with a brutal, physical style of running. He is thought of by most to be one of the best ever from Dillon High School but his future (post high school career) opportunities were limited.

10

Caroline, James "J.C."

RB

Booker T. Washington

Caroline was a thee sports standout at Booker T. Washington High School and was lethal running the football because of his speed. Because of the times, he looked for a college career to the Big Ten and wen to Illinois. But those who saw him on the field in high school said he was a phenom for any era.
